WRITTEN   PROPOSAL
_____________________________________________________

The way St. Michaels School is organized, in term of space, there is not much to do. They were forced to use multigrade classrooms due to the limited space, budget and number of teachers available. Our idea is to forward a proposal that is beneficial and at the same time, worth every the money spent on every square metre.

Since the space in the classrooms is already limited and the school has the same idea, I would propose  that we incorporate the mezzanine level into each classroom. This would mean that the height of the roof should be taken into consideration and maybe lift it slightly up to accommodate confortably this alteration. The mezzanine will cover 1/4 of the floor area. It can be set approximately 3m from the back and 1.5 or 2m from the side and accessed via a ladder. In order to create useful spaces all arround the classrooms, built-in shelves on the walls for school materials storage can be used.

The other intervention that I propose is a playground outside the class which could also be used for learning process and stimulate outdoor explorations. This playground can be built with gumpoles with thatch screens and translucent sheeting on rafters/purlins or water proof fabric cover tied up to the poles.

By Incorporating interior and exterior (playground) plays a major role in widening the educational horizons of the children. I believe that if money was not a prolem, alot could be done for the well being of St. Michaels Primary School.

Green Point Park Exercise

Green Point Part is quite a inspirational development to visit. The idea behind it is to empower natural landscaping by incorporating green architecture elements. Also to create green spaces were people can enjoy nature in a different perspective. Spaces are all linked by means of carefully designed path ways, water features. Among the landscaping elements I found the gumpoles benches and the different pergola designs and details  quite interesting to look at. It shows that who ever design it had fun and enjoyed the process.

Proccess folowed at St. MiChael's

Background Of the Project

St. Michaels primary school was sellected for this intervention due to its involvement in CPUT Multigrade Program. The intervention is part of a service learning project completed by second year Architectural Technology students of 2011. Project was developed and implemented by a group of students  with help of lecturers and hired contractors. It was a quite successfull intervention, the school needed more spaces for the kids to play and explore the environment arround the school. That is just what the new spaces created by a pergola, fire place and acces decking provides to the school.

The Design build process

As said before the project was developed and implemented by the second year students. Like a design competition students were approached with a task to analysed and proppose an adequated and sustainable intervension. A group of students  came up with the chosen option wich was to create a covered area outside to serve as playground and access route to the existing play area. With the help of all students, lecturers, sponsors and hired contractors, project was comopleted about a week and a half.

Contribution to St Michaels that this intervention will have

It is important to know that children are sensitive creatures, they are moved and captivated by small things. With the new play area, students of different ages and classes will be more motivated to come to school because they know there is new attrations and can do new things while at school. They will never forget everyday that was shared with us during constrution, moments that they will remember everytime they come out to play during brake.
