Q U E N T I O N S
1.    What is the purpose of this drawing/information?

These drawings are all part of the same project (Entrance Toilet block for a Clinic in Langa). These set of drawings serve for: council submission, tender, working drawings, drawings for engineer and others.
2.    Who are the people for whom you have prepared this drawing/information?

These drawings were prepared for the Architect, Lisa Stapley, so She can sit with the client, engineers and other Architects to discuss issues involving structural engineering, costs, options of materials, etc.
3.    Are there any other ways to provide the same drawing/information?
For now Drawings are only presented  in CAD.
4.    Explain the purpose of every component of the drawing/information mean (for example, why do you put certain dimensions on a specific drawing?)

Firstly we started, me and the Architect, by analyzing some sketches she did to see the building works. North Point to show how how is the building oriented geographically. Dimensions are critical in any architectural drawings, they are all over the drawings to make sure contractors know the size of the building and components they are dealing with. Hatching is also very important and shown when cutting a material. Title of drawings and scale to guide builders so that they know what part of the building they looking at and the exact scale used. Specification for every single material to be used, in my office student is suppose to do most of the specification, with the architects help. In general it necessary to provide a roof/site plan with ERF number, floor plan, elevations and sections, details and schedules.

Additional general questions:

1.    How does the project and drawing reference system work in your office? Explain this diagrammatically.

At my office they work in a system of one project per student. They architect xplains to the student how he came up with the design and how the building works. Once started we have reviews every week and deadlines. Once the drawings are complete, the head Architect will review and approve for council submission, tender, engineer and working drawings.

2.    How does your office find work on a sustainable basis?

The office is quite big and has been arround for more than 5 years. During this time lots of work have been done for a number of clients. Presently the office has a number of fixed private clients and it has its own projects running, non-stop, during the year.

3.    Analyse your office environment
a.    How many people work there?
As I said before, the office is quite big. If not mistaken, arroung 30-50 people work there.
They all very friendly, there is a kitchen with fridje, fresh milk everyday, coffee, suger, tea and a microwave.
b.    What are their respective responsibilities?
Amond the staff, there are Architects, Quantity Surveyors, project managers, human
resources and cleaners. This Includs students doing training for the different areas.
c.    How does the communication work in the office – who reports to whom etc?
Students report to their direct supervisor and supervisor will report to their  superiors. There
are cases were I have necessity to contact the head architect, He is very frindly and always
 willing to help students.
d.    How are new projects tackled – who gets involved in which stages of the project?
As I said before the policy in the office is one project one student. The student is issued with
the project and he is the one responsible for all the drawings to be created. If the student
feels like he is not capable to do some drawings he can communicate the supervisor and
that specific drawing, which could be a detail or electrical layout, is assigned to some other
 student or a qualified technician.
